Highly touted point guard recruit Tremont Waters has asked to be released from his letter of intent with Georgetown, according to an ESPN report Saturday.

Waters — a 5-foot-11 prospect from New Haven, Conn. — earned a scholarship offer from Kentucky and appeared to be one of the Wildcats’ top point guard targets in the class of 2017 at one point last year, but UK eventually cooled on his recruitment, and Waters ultimately committed to Georgetown in October after also taking official visits to Indiana and Kansas. He signed with the Hoyas a few weeks later.

UPDATE: Georgetown has now emerged as the Crystal Ball favorite for Waters.

As of Wednesday morning, Indiana was still the favorite on the 247Sports Crystal Ball page of highly touted point guard Tremont Waters, but the margin was tightening.

Waters — a 5-foot-11 prospect from New Haven, Conn. — will announce his college decision at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. He took an official visit to Kentucky last month — and the Wildcats emerged as a possible frontrunner after that trip — but the Herald-Leader was told Tuesday that it is highly unlikely he will end up at UK.

Four-star point guard Tremont Waters will announce his college decision Wednesday at 4 p.m., according to the New Haven (Conn.) Register, his hometown newspaper.

Waters — a 5-foot-11 prospect — took an official visit to Kentucky last month and has hosted UK Coach John Calipari three times during the current fall recruiting period. Scout.com ranks him as the No. 36 overall prospect in the class of 2017.

The player’s father told the New Haven Register on Tuesday that Waters’ list has been cut to four schools, but he did not specify those programs. Waters took official visits to UK, Indiana, Kansas and Georgetown in recent weeks. Duke, UConn and Yale were also on his most-recent public list of schools.

The recruitment of highly touted point guard Tremont Waters has swung back in Indiana’s favor, according to the 247Sports Crystal Ball.

Indiana is the new leader on Waters’ Crystal Ball page after several recruiting observers — including 247Sports analysts Jerry Meyer and Andrew Slater — picked the Hoosiers over the past two days.

UK emerged as the favorite following Waters’ official visit to Lexington last month, but that talk has cooled over the past couple of weeks due to doubts of whether the Wildcats can convince two of their three point guard targets in the class of 2017 to team up in college. Kentucky is also recruiting five-star point guards Quade Green and Trae Young, who will both be in Rupp Arena for Big Blue Madness on Friday night.

After visiting with five-star shooting guard Lonnie Walker in Pennsylvania on Wednesday afternoon, UK Coach John Calipari planned to travel to Connecticut to meet with four-star point guard Tremont Waters, the Herald-Leader has learned.

Waters — a 5-foot-11 prospect from New Haven, Conn. — hosted Calipari for an in-home visit earlier this month, and he took an official visit to Kentucky two weekends ago. He has also taken official visits to Georgetown and Indiana, and he’s scheduled to be at Kansas this weekend for what could be the final official visit of his recruitment.

Waters — a 5-foot-11 prospect from New Haven, Conn. — is now considering UK, Duke, Georgetown, Indiana, Kansas, UConn and Yale, his hometown school. Waters has scholarship offers from all seven programs.

UK appears to be targeting Trae Young and Quade Green as its top two point guards in the class of 2017, and Waters is the only other point guard in the class with an offer from the Wildcats.

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. — According to 247Sports national analyst Jerry Meyer, a new frontrunner has emerged for highly touted class of 2017 point guard Tremont Waters.

Meyer logged a new Crystal Ball pick for Waters in favor of UConn on Thursday. The Huskies now have a majority of the picks on Waters’ Crystal Ball page, replacing Duke as the favorite in his recruitment.

Waters — a 5-foot-11 prospect from New Haven, Conn. — picked up scholarship offers from both UK and Duke earlier this year, but those programs seem to be prioritizing other players at the point guard spot.
