UK fans holding out hope that first-team All-American point guard Tyler Ulis might return to Lexington for a third season got another dose of reality from Coach John Calipari on Thursday.

In his pre-SEC Tournament press conference, Calipari was asked to respond to the awards Ulis has been racking up in recent days, and he heaped praise on his 5-foot-9 superstar.

Sophomore point guard Tyler Ulis has been one of the best players in college basketball over the past few weeks, and it sounds like UK fans won’t get to watch him in a Wildcats’ uniform much longer.

“We’re going to have another point guard next year,” Coach John Calipari said on his post-game radio show following UK’s victory over Alabama in Rupp Arena on Tuesday night, prefacing that statement by saying Ulis is not a “four-year” player.

UK sophomore point guard Tyler Ulis came up big again Saturday, scoring 21 points and dishing out five assists to lead the Wildcats past Vanderbilt, 76-57, in Rupp Arena.

John Calipari was asked afterward why he pursued Ulis, who is smaller than the prototypical Calipari point guard. Give the assist to assistant coach Kenny Payne.

“When I watched him,” Calipari said, “I just said, ‘This kid is unbelievable in pick-and-rolls. And he’s got the heart of a lion. And I’ll put enough big guys around him, he’ll be fine.’ He has a burning desire to win. And I watched him. And I’m just like — Kenny Payne just kept on me because I said I don’t like little guys. And I even call him little guy. Makes him so bad. Give the little guy the ball. He just smokes, it’s coming out of his ears when I do that.

UK has called a press conference for Thursday afternoon, and several Wildcats are expected to announce their decisions to declare for the NBA Draft.

Freshman point guard Tyler Ulis won’t be in that group.

Ulis tweeted Wednesday that he has “unfinished business” and is excited for next season. UK Coach John Calipari said on his radio show Tuesday night that both Ulis and sophomore forward Marcus Lee told him they did not need any NBA feedback and planned to return to Kentucky next season.

UK freshman point guard Tyler Ulis suffered a sprained right ankle during a pick-up game and is wearing a soft boot as a precaution, the school announced Thursday.

Ulis and the rest of his fellow freshmen arrived in Lexington last week in preparation for summer workouts with their new team. The 5-foot-9 point guard was a McDonald’s All-American in the class of 2014 and is expected to back up Andrew Harrison for the Wildcats this season.

Kentucky will play several games against international competition during a tour in the Bahamas in August.

The return of Andrew and Aaron Harrison to Kentucky for next season probably means a lesser role for incoming freshmen Devin Booker and Tyler Ulis.

That could be a good thing.

If the Harrison twins had declared for the NBA Draft, Ulis and Booker probably would have started and played significant minutes during their first season in Lexington. Instead, the two newcomers will get to practice every day against two future NBA players — and defensive stalwart Dominique Hawkins — and they should still see quite a bit of time on the court.

The level of pressure won’t be there, but the playing time will.

Andrew and Aaron Harrison will obviously be the favorites to start at guard, but 247Sports recruiting analyst Jerry Meyer said Booker could still be in line to make the starting five.

KETTERING, Ohio — UK Coach John Calipari and a couple of assistants were treated to high-scoring performances from two of the program’s biggest recruits Saturday night.

UK signee Tyler Ulis and Class of 2015 target Luke Kennard both put up impressive numbers in front of a sold-out crowd at the Flyin’ To The Hoop Invitational.

Kennard went first, scoring 38 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in Franklin (Ohio) High’s 67-64 loss to HCYA (Texas), a squad led by five-star North Carolina signee Justin Jackson. Kennard’s shot wasn’t falling like it usually does — he was 12 of 32 from the floor — but the 6-foot-5 guard made 14 of 16 free-throw attempts.

The long list of McDonald’s All-Americans nominations was made public last week, and it was no surprise to see all four UK men’s basketball signees among the hundreds of names to make the cut.

It also wouldn’t be a surprise if all four made the list.

Trey Lyles and Karl Towns Jr. are two consensus top-10 seniors who are both putting up big numbers for nationally ranked teams this season. Lyles and Arsenal Tech (Ind.) are 12-1 on the season and riding an 11-game winning streak. Towns is off to a 9-0 start with St. Joe’s Metuchen (N.J.).

Those two future Wildcats look like near locks to be among the 24 players chosen for the McDonald’s All-American Game when rosters are announced Jan. 29.

PADUCAH — UK signee Tyler Ulis had 14 points, 10 assists and six steals despite limited playing time in Saturday night’s victory at Mustang Madness.

UK Coach John Calipari and two assistants watched Ulis’ dazzling performance. The 5-foot-9 point guard led Marian Catholic (Ill.) to an 80-63 victory over Lausanne Collegiate (Tenn.) in the final game of the inaugural event. Ulis, who is nursing a sprained wrist, played exactly 21 minutes in the rout and committed just one turnover.

He was named the game’s most valuable player and posed for pictures and signed autographs for UK fans for several minutes following the game.

HighSchoolCube.com will once again broadcast a game featuring UK signee Tyler Ulis on Tuesday night. The online streaming service will show Ulis and Marian Catholic vs. Thornwood at 7:30 p.m. ET.

This will be Marian’s second game in the Chicago Heights Classic.

On Monday night, Ulis scored 20 of his 24 points in the first half of Marian’s 75-62 victory over Thornton Fractional South. The 5-foot-9 point guard also made four three-pointers and had six steals.

Ulis signed with the Wildcats earlier this month after committing to Kentucky in the fall. Scout.com considers him the No. 29 overall prospect in the Class of 2014.
