Kentucky landed a commitment Friday night from defensive lineman Taures Payne, a prospect out of Northwest Mississippi Community College.

Payne — a 6-foot-4, 260-pound defensive end originally from Hoover, Ala. — had 33 tackles and 2.5 sacks in 11 junior college games last season. He will have two years to play two seasons when he joins Kentucky’s team for the 2019 class.

He does not have a star ranking from 247Sports or Rivals.com.

Three-star cornerback Jay Ward committed to Kentucky on Friday afternoon, becoming the Wildcats’ ninth commitment for the class of 2019 and the program’s fourth pledge from the state of Georgia for next year.

Ward — a 6-foot-1, 175-pound prospect from Moultrie, Ga. — is the No. 82 cornerback in the class of 2019, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. He is the No. 98 overall recruit in Georgia, according to those rankings.

Rivals.com is rolling out updated football rankings for the class of 2020 this week, and there’s a familiar name on one of the lists at a marquee position.

Lexington Catholic quarterback Beau Allen — a major UK target — is ranked by Rivals as the No. 11 pro-style quarterback in the class of 2020. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound prospect picked up a UK scholarship offer early in his high school career, and his father is a former UK football player.

Michigan is among the other schools that have offered Allen, who completed 204 of 329 passes for 2,873 yards and 33 touchdowns with nine interceptions in 13 games as a sophomore this past season.

Three-star linebacker Tra Wilkins announced his commitment to Kentucky on Monday night, one week after taking an official visit to Lexington.

Wilkins — a 6-foot-2, 210-pound prospect from Stone Mountain, Ga. — is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 71 outside linebacker and No. 937 overall prospect in the recruiting class of 2019.

He is the eighth commitment in this recruiting cycle for Kentucky, which has the No. 48 ranked class nationally and No. 11 in the Southeastern Conference, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

Thirteen days after announcing his commitment to the University of Kentucky, in-state football standout Shawnkel Knight-Goff has re-opened his recruitment.

Knight-Goff — a 6-foot-4, 210-pound defensive lineman from Doss High School in Louisville — is the No. 43 weakside defensive end in the class of 2019, according to the 247Sports rankings.

He announced Thursday night that he’s no longer committed to Kentucky.

Do-it-all offensive threat Wandale Robinson has picked up a new scholarship offer from Ohio State, he announced Wednesday morning.

Robinson — a 5-foot-9 prospect from Western Hills High School in Frankfort — is one of UK’s top recruiting targets for the 2019 class. 247Sports ranks him as the No. 6 all-purpose back nationally and the No. 7 overall prospect from Kentucky in that group. He’ll be among the favorites for Mr. Football honors this fall.

Three-star offensive tackle Jake Pope announced his commitment to the University of Kentucky on Wednesday night.

Pope — a 6-foot-7, 275-pound prospect from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. — picked up a scholarship offer from UK last month. He also has power-five offers from Michigan State, Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh, North Carolina State and Illinois.

247Sports ranks Pope as the No. 104 offensive tackle nationally in the class of 2019, and he’s the Wildcats’ second commitment for the O-line in that group, joining West Jessamine’s Eli Cox, who committed last week.

Class of 2019 quarterback Connor Bazelak landed a scholarship offer from Georgia on Wednesday.

Bazelak — a 6-foot-4 prospect from Dayton, Ohio — is Kentucky’s top recruiting target at the position for the 2019 class and has already visited Lexington several times. He also has offers from Pittsburgh, Purdue, Missouri and North Carolina, among many others, and recently visited Tennessee.

247Sports ranks Bazelak as the No. 16 pro-style quarterback in the 2019 class. 247Sports national director of recruiting Steve Wiltfong logged a Crystal Ball prediction last month in favor of Kentucky.

Five in-state players make ESPN football rankings

ESPN released its first expanded football recruiting rankings for the class of 2019 on Monday morning, and five players from the state of Kentucky made the list.

South Warren defensive lineman Jacob Lacey is No. 116 overall, Trinity defensive end Stephen Herron is No. 137 overall, Glasgow offensive lineman Tanner Bowles is No. 217 overall, Scott County offensive lineman Bryan Hudson is No. 250 overall, and Louisville Christian wide receiver Milton Wright is No. 274 overall.

It’s an extraordinarily talented class of in-state football players, but it doesn’t appear that UK will land any of those five prospects.
