Ex-UK target Mayes commits to Florida State

Huntington Prep senior Xavier Rathan Mayes committed to Florida State on Saturday.

Xavier Rathan Mayes, one of the top players in the class of 2013, committed to Florida State on Saturday night.

Mayes, who no longer had UK on his list of schools, is a close friend and teammate of Andrew Wiggins, the No. 1 player in high school basketball and a major UK recruiting target. The two Canadians play together at Huntington Prep in West Virginia.

Wiggins, who could reclassify to 2013 and enter college next year, has Kentucky and Florida State at the top of his list. Both of Wiggins’ parents were athletes for the Seminoles. There is no timetable for Wiggins’ reclassification or college decision. He was supposed to attend Friday’s Big Blue Madness, but instead traveled home to Canada to visit his family. He has said he will probably make a trip to Lexington for one of UK’s early home games.

Rathan-Mayes announces final five and UK is out

Xavier Rathan Mayes does not have UK among his final five schools.

Xavier Rathan-Mayes tweeted out his final five schools Friday, and Kentucky is no longer in the mix.

Mayes, ESPN’s 23rd-ranked player in the class of 2013, is still considering Florida State, Texas, Baylor, Illinois and UConn. He eliminated UK, UCLA, Memphis, Kansas and Alabama on Friday.

UK was the only school in his final 10 that had not offered a scholarship.

Mayes is a high school and AAU teammate of Andrew Wiggins, the top player in high school basketball and UK’s No. 1 recruiting target. Mayes and Wiggins have openly discussed attending the same school. UK and Florida State are widely thought to be the top two schools on Wiggins’ list.

Xavier Rathan Mayes has UK among his top 10 schools and will visit Lexington on Friday.

2013 shooting guard Xavier Rathan Mayes made the first cut in his recruitment Tuesday, and Kentucky is still in the picture

Mayes tweeted that Baylor, UConn, Alabama, Florida State, Kansas, Kentucky, Illinois, Memphis, Texas and UCLA were his top 10 schools. That was the order he listed the schools, though he said it wasn’t an indication of his interest level.

Missing from the list was Louisville, which was one of more than 30 schools that had offered Mayes a scholarship. UK is not on the offer list … yet. The Cats will host Mayes for an unofficial visit in Lexington on Friday before the senior-to-be heads to nearby Huntington Prep for his final season of high school.
