One of the most athletic prospects in the 2021 class, Collins emerged on Kentucky’s radar over the summer and is one of the few frontcourt players in that group with a UK scholarship offer.
An accomplished shot-blocker, Collins is also emerging as a talented offensive player capable of playing away from the basket. His explosive athleticism makes him a handful for opponents on both ends of the floor, and his high school coach expects Collins to emerge as a dangerous pick-and-roll and pick-and-pop threat in the near future.
Defensively, he’s among the best prospects in the country.
“His explosive jumping ability is the thing about him,” Coach Jarrod Boston told the Herald-Leader. “Usually you find those kids around 6-5, 6-6 that have that unbelievable vertical jump. But he’s 6-10 and he has an explosive jumping ability. He can get up twice quicker than most people can get up once. That’s kind of what sets him apart.
Kentucky, Oklahoma and Texas are seen as the three frontrunners in his recruitment. Jai Lucas, a recent addition to UK’s staff, was also Collins’ lead recruiter at Texas when he was an assistant coach with the Longhorns.
Collins averaged 24.6 points, 13.7 rebounds and 7.7 blocks per game in his junior season at Atlanta High School in northeast Texas.
“He is off the charts, defensively. He’s every bit of 6-9, 6-10 and he’s got the longest arms that you’ve ever seen in your life. … And he is just superb at blocking shots. He has unreal timing, and he gets to some shots that sometimes I just shake my head and look at the assistant and say, ‘How did he get that one?’”
