Kentucky extended a scholarship offer to Darius Garland during the middle of the July evaluation period this summer. John Calipari had watched the 6-1 point guard several times in high school and travel team settings before that.
In the running for the No. 1 ranking at his position in the 2018 class, Garland is a talented, quick prospect who can make things happen off the dribble and create scoring opportunities for his teammates. He appears to be one of the most popular players in the country among his peers, with top-5 recruits Marvin Bagley and Cameron Reddish noting that they would like to play alongside him at the college level.
MaxPreps.com named Garland to its first-team junior all-American squad following last season, when he averaged 23.4 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game for Brentwood Academy. He was one of the star players on the Nike circuit this summer.
Garland has narrowed his list to UK, Duke, Indiana, Kansas, UCLA and Vaderbilt. He grew up in Indiana, but Vandy is now the hometown school and is considered a legitimate threat to land his commitment. Duke is also seen by some recruiting analysts as the favorite.
The star point guard is taking UK’s offer seriously, but the Cats appear to be long shots in his recruitment.

Garland averaged 16.8 points and 4.8 assists per game on the Nike circuit during the summer. He was a 33-percent three-point shooter and made 87 percent of his free throws. Garland averaged 15.7 points at the Adidas Eurocamp in Italy in June and was the leading scorer at that event.
There is no clear timetable for Garland’s college decision.
