Hawkins — a lifelong UK fan — caught the attention of John Calipari late in the season, and the UK coach saw three of his four games in Rupp Arena during the Sweet Sixteen.
The Central Kentucky combo guard scored 107 points in four games in Rupp, winning Sweet Sixteen MVP honors and leading Madison Central to its first state championship in school history.

Hawkins excelled against elite competition all season long, scoring 56 points in two games against Bullitt East, 58 points in two games against Ballard, and 29 points in an early-season matchup against UK signees Andrew and Aaron Harrison.
Morehead State and Western Kentucky were long the frontrunners in Hawkins’ recruitment, but Kentucky expressed interest once word of his post-season success started to spread. Hawkins jumped at the opportunity when a scholarship offer came in April.
Recruiting services generally consider  Hawkins  a three-star prospect and the No. 2 overall senior in the state of Kentucky, behind Derek Willis.
He was named Mr. Basketball and the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year after the 2012-13 season. Hawkins will be the 17th Kentucky Mr. Basketball to play for the Wildcats.
