On Nov. 16, Dontaie Allen became the first in-state basketball player in more than five years to sign with the University of Kentucky, the program he rooted for growing up. Allen has been a star player for Pendleton County High School and had a breakout summer with his M.A.T.T.S. Mustangs travel team, earning scholarship offers from John Calipari and other top programs. He committed to UK following that summer and will be one of the favorites for Mr. Basketball honors in Kentucky during his senior year at Pendleton County this winter. Last season, Allen averaged 31.8 points and 11.4 rebounds, shooting 59.1 percent from the floor and 39.6 percent from three-point range. He enters his senior season with 2,697 career points and 1,044 career rebounds, and Pendleton’s schedule will take him all over the state. “Dontaie is one of Kentucky’s finest,” Calipari said when Allen signed. “I love Dontaie’s ability to score the ball in different ways. He’s got a lot of skills with the ball in his hands and athleticism to play above the rim. I’m always excited anytime there’s a player from our state who can come in and help this program and have an impact. Dontaie does all that for us.”
