UK came out of this past season looking to add at least one more guard for the 2017-18 campaign, and Smith was one of the first serious options to pop up on the Wildcats’ radar.
The 6-foot-5 prospect is capable of playing on or off the ball, and he came into his own this past season — averaging 21.9 points, 8.4 assists and 8.2 rebounds per game, winning Mr. Basketball honors in Illinois and leading his high school squad to a 30-2 record.
Smith was once committed to play baseball at Missouri, but an elbow injury cut short his career on the diamond. He turned his full attention to basketball for the first time and is now a consensus Top 100 national recruit.
Michigan State, Ohio State and Illinois are among the schools that have extended scholarship offers to Smith, and UK has now joined that list of programs that have offered.
