Richards announced his commitment to Kentucky on Nov. 10 — one day after the start of the early signing period — to become the Wildcats’ first pledge from the class of 2017.
He chose UK over fellow finalists Arizona and Syracuse.
Richards is one of the best rebounders and post defenders in high school basketball, and he should be able to provide UK with immediate help on the defensive side of the floor.
The Queens, N.Y., native played for the same New Jersey high school program that produced former UK star Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, and John Calipari visited him multiple times during the fall, securing frontunner status in his recruitment. He was the state player of the year led his team to the New Jersey Tournament of Champions title
Richards has also visited Kentucky twice since the summer, including a trip for Big Blue Madness in October.

Summer ball stats

Richards averaged 12.0 points, 9.8 rebounds and 1.9 blocked shots in 23.0 minutes per game for Expressions Elite on the Nike circuit.

How long will he be a Cat?

Richards is currently projected as the No. 19 overall pick in the 2018 draft, according to

“He brings a defensive presence. He’s a guy that rebounds his area really well. He plays with toughness. He’s physical. He finishes off plays around the rim. This is a talented post player who can really help them on that end of the floor.”
