Grimes is one of the most recent recipients of a UK scholarship offer, getting the good news from Coach John Calipari in late March, after he averaged 28.1 points, 8.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game as a junior in high school.
Often listed as a point guard, Grimes has great size for that position and is big enough — and skilled enough in other areas — to play off the ball as well, an important distinction for UK, which is expected to land a commitment from five-star point guard Immanuel Quickley and could return five-star freshman point guards Quade Green and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander after this season.
“He’s a combo guard with good size and good athletic ability,” Scout.com’s Evan Daniels told the Herald-Leader. “You can play him on or off the ball, and he’s effective in that way. He can make shots. He’s good from mid range, and he’s also a pretty good distributor.”
Grimes has narrowed his list to UK, Arizona, Baylor, Kansas, Marquette, Texas and Texas A&M. The Jayhawks have been the buzz school in his recruitment for the past few months, but UK — and Calipari, specifically — has stayed in constant contact throughout the summer, and the Cats shouldn’t be counted out just yet.
