Montgomery

Five-star power forward EJ Montgomery officially signed with the University of Kentucky on Thursday, a little more than a week after committing to the Wildcats.

Montgomery — a 6-foot-11 power forward from Marietta, Ga. — picked UK over scholarship offers from Duke, North Carolina and several other top schools. Earlier Thursday, 247Sports placed Montgomery as the No. 6 overall recruit in its final class of 2018 rankings. That’s the highest that any of the major recruiting services ranked any of UK’s commitments in this cycle.

Lecque

Five-star combo guard Jalen Lecque is still on UK’s recruiting radar.

The New York native — now playing for Christ School in North Carolina — had an in-home visit with the Wildcats over the weekend, according to national recruiting analyst Andrew Slater.

Duke assistant coach Nate James is expected to visit Lecque on Tuesday.

The 6-foot-4 prospect has been on Kentucky’s radar for months, and the Herald-Leader has been told in the past that Lecque could reclassify to 2018 if he were to land a scholarship offer from a blueblood program like UK or Duke.

Keldon Johnson

Keldon Johnson remained a top-10 national prospect in ESPN’s new rankings for the class of 2018, but he was one of three future Kentucky Wildcats that dropped in the website’s final update for this recruiting cycle.

Johnson fell one spot to No. 7 overall in the final rankings released Tuesday. Also dropping in the ESPN rankings were UK signees Immanuel Quickley (from No. 17 to No. 23 overall) and Tyler Herro (from No. 25 to No. 28 overall).

Before the final update, ESPN was the only major recruiting service that pegged Herro as a five-star recruit. He is now a four-star player on ESPN’s list.

New UK commitment EJ Montgomery jumped two spots to No. 14 overall.

Duke’s trio of R.J. Barrett, Zion Williamson and Cameron Reddish finished 1-2-3, respectively, in the final ESPN rankings.

Rivals.com finalized its basketball recruiting rankings for players in the class of 2018 on Monday, and Duke signee R.J. Barrett remains the No. 1 prospect for next season’s freshman class.

The Blue Devils no longer have a sweep of the top three players in 2018, however.

North Carolina signee Nassir Little jumped from No. 5 to No. 2 in the final rankings, leapfrogging Duke commitments Cameron Reddish, who fell one spot to No. 3, and Zion Williamson, who dropped two spots to No. 5. Oregon signee Bol Bol is No. 4 overall in the final rankings.

Vanderbilt

The new ESPN NBA mock draft for 2019 includes zero UK players in the first round. That would be a first for the Wildcats under Coach John Calipari.

ESPN’s updated 2019 draft has three Duke commitments at the very top — R.J. Barrett, Cameron Reddish and Zion Williamson, in that order — only eight one-and-done players total and zero Wildcats in the first round. Jarred Vanderbilt, who would be a sophomore next season, is the top UK player at No. 31 overall, and Nick Richards, who would also be a sophomore next season, is the only other Wildcat on the list at No. 50 overall.

John Calipari

UK coaches John Calipari and Kenny Payne are expected to visit five-star guard Jalen Lecque in North Carolina on Wednesday, according to national recruiting analyst Andrew Slater.

Lecque — a 6-foot-4 prospect at Christ School (N.C.) — is currently the No. 12 overall prospect in the 2019 class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. He was originally in the 2018 class before moving back a grade to 2019, though he has publicly acknowledged in recent weeks that he’s considering reclassifying back to 2018, which would allow him to play college basketball next season.

Kentucky has only three signees so far for the 2018 class, and the Cats could have a spot for Lecque in that group.

Wiseman

UK assistant coach Tony Barbee was back at the City of Palms Classic on Tuesday evening to check out James Wiseman, arguably the No. 1 overall recruit in the class of 2019.

Wiseman — a 6-foot-11 power forward from Memphis — is ranked No. 1 in the junior class by Scout.com and ESPN, and Kentucky is the early favorite in his recruitment. He struck down rumors earlier this month that he might reclassify to 2018 and play college basketball next season.

Barbee watched top 2019 prospects Bryan Antoine and Scottie Lewis at the Florida-based showcase Monday night.

Kevin Knox

ESPN draft insider Jonathan Givony has a new NBA mock draft up for 2018, and four Kentucky Wildcats are projected as selections.

Freshman forward Kevin Knox is the top Cat listed — going No. 10 overall to the Los Angeles Clippers. He’s followed by fellow freshmen Hamidou Diallo (No. 20), Nick Richards (No. 26) and PJ Washington (No. 37). There are 30 picks in the first round of the NBA Draft.

In that scenario, UK would return seven scholarship players next season: juniors Wenyen Gabriel, Sacha Killeya-Jones and Tai Wynyard, and sophomores Jemarl Baker, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Quade Green and Jarred Vanderbilt. Baker and Vanderbilt have yet to play this season due to injuries.

Grimes

Five-star basketball recruit Quentin Grimes announced his commitment to Kansas on Wednesday night, the final day of the early signing period.

Grimes — a 6-foot-5 combo guard from the Houston area — picked the Jayhawks over fellow finalists Kentucky, Marquette and Texas. The Longhorns were thought to be Kansas’ top competition going into the fall signing period. Grimes is the No. 16 overall recruit in the 2018 class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

Kansas now has the No. 1-ranked class in the country, according to 247Sports. Duke is No. 2, and Kentucky is ranked No. 3. Grimes joins a group of future Jayhawks that already included Top 50 recruits Devon Dotson, Silvio De Sousa and David McCormack.

Kentucky has already signed highly touted backcourt players Immanuel Quickley, Keldon Johnson and Tyler Herro for its 2018 class.
