Three-star defensive lineman Cavon Butler announced his commitment to Kentucky for the class of 2019 on Friday afternoon.

Butler — a 6-foot-3, 285-pound prospect from Toledo — is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 53 defensive tackle nationally in his class. He attended an Alabama camp in late June and said afterward that he had received a scholarship offer from Coach Nick Saban.

Pittsburgh, West Virginia and Cincinnati were among his other offers.

Butler was credited with 9.5 tackles and three forced fumbles as a junior last season. He joins Taures Payne as the second defensive lineman in UK’s 2019 class, which now features 15 commitments.

Moses Douglass is the only other UK commitment from the state of Ohio in this class so far.

Lewis

Highly touted guard Kira Lewis released his updated recruiting list Tuesday, and Kentucky is not one of the 12 schools still in contention.

Lewis — a 6-2 prospect from Hazel Green, Ala. — visited Lexington in June and was watched several times by the Wildcats’ coaching staff this spring and summer, but UK never extended a scholarship offer and appears to be focused on other guards in the 2019 class.

His new list of 12 schools includes Alabama, Auburn, Baylor, Georgia, Houston, Indiana, Iowa State, Kansas, Louisiana State, Mississippi, Providence and Texas Christian. Lewis has also mentioned the possibility of reclassifying to 2018, though a decision on that is not yet final.

Lewis

Highly touted combo guard Kira Lewis told reporters at an event in Las Vegas late Thursday night that he is considering reclassifying to 2018.

Lewis, currently the No. 30 overall player in the 247Sports composite rankings for 2019, has been getting looks from Kentucky’s coaches all summer, though he has not yet received a scholarship offer from the Wildcats. He visited UK in June.

Whether he stays in 2019 or makes the move to 2018, Alabama is looking like a major favorite in Lewis’ recruitment. National recruiting insider Andrew Slater reported Thursday night that Lewis will make a final decision on reclassification in early August.

Lewis

247Sports national analyst Evan Daniels has joined other recruiting experts in predicting that Alabama will land home-state star Kira Lewis, who has been on UK’s radar for a possible scholarship offer.

Lewis — a 6-foot-2 guard from Hazel Green, Ala. — was one of the top players on the Nike circuit this spring and vaulted to the No. 24 overall spot in the 247Sports rankings for the 2019 class, making him a five-star recruit. UK has shown interest in his recruitment — even hosting him on an unofficial visit to Lexington last month — but the Cats have not yet come through with a scholarship offer.

Kira Lewis will take an unofficial visit to Kentucky next month.

Lewis — a 6-foot-3 guard from Alabama — is scheduled to visit UK on June 10, according to recruiting analyst Jake Weingarten.

One of the top scorers on the Nike circuit this spring, Lewis told the Herald-Leader a few weeks ago that Alabama, Auburn, Baylor, Iowa State and Tennessee were among the schools recruiting him the hardest. Since then, he’s picked up new scholarship offers from Kansas, Indiana and several other top programs.

Bryan Hudson

ESPN released its first expanded football recruiting rankings for the class of 2019 on Monday morning, and five players from the state of Kentucky made the list.

South Warren defensive lineman Jacob Lacey is No. 116 overall, Trinity defensive end Stephen Herron is No. 137 overall, Glasgow offensive lineman Tanner Bowles is No. 217 overall, Scott County offensive lineman Bryan Hudson is No. 250 overall, and Louisville Christian wide receiver Milton Wright is No. 274 overall.

It’s an extraordinarily talented class of in-state football players, but it doesn’t appear that UK will land any of those five prospects.

Class of 2019 quarterback Paul Tyson committed to Alabama on Thursday.

Tyson — a 6-foot-4 prospect from Trussville, Ala. — is the great-grandson of legendary coach Bear Bryant and was one of UK’s biggest quarterback targets early in the 2019 cycle. He’s the No. 7 pro-style QB in the class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.
