Carey

There’s a clear two-way battle for the top spot in the basketball recruiting rankings for the class of 2019.

Rivals.com’s latest rankings, released Thursday, kept Vernon Carey with the No. 1 ranking, edging out fellow high school big man James Wiseman.

Carey — a 6-foot-10 power forward from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. — is ranked No. 2 behind Wiseman in the most recent 247Sports and ESPN rankings for the 2019 class, but Rivals.com has had him in the top spot for a while.

Montgomery

Five-star power forward EJ Montgomery officially signed with the University of Kentucky on Thursday, a little more than a week after committing to the Wildcats.

Montgomery — a 6-foot-11 power forward from Marietta, Ga. — picked UK over scholarship offers from Duke, North Carolina and several other top schools. Earlier Thursday, 247Sports placed Montgomery as the No. 6 overall recruit in its final class of 2018 rankings. That’s the highest that any of the major recruiting services ranked any of UK’s commitments in this cycle.

Wiseman

Top UK basketball recruiting target James Wiseman had an in-home visit with Memphis Coach Penny Hardaway and new Tigers assistant coach Mike Miller on Wednesday.

Hardaway was Wiseman’s coach with Team Penny on the Nike circuit last summer, and the 6-foot-11 power forward from Nashville then transferred to Memphis East High School to play for Hardaway this past season.

Wiseman hosted UK Coach John Calipari and assistant coach Joel Justus for an in-home recruiting visit Monday, and he was the first player from the class of 2019 to earn a scholarship offer from the Wildcats.

Morton

UK Coach John Calipari visited with 2020 recruit Ethan Morton on Tuesday, according to Rivals.com analyst Corey Evans.

Morton — a 6-foot-4 guard — is ranked by Rivals as the No. 50 prospect in the 2020 class. He’s the No. 59 overall recruit in the 247Sports composite rankings.

He plays for Butler (Pa.) Area High School, which is located less than an hour from Pittsburgh. Calipari is originally from the area and often checks in on local recruits when he’s visiting. Those trips don’t always lead to a sustained recruitment, but Morton — still just a sophomore — does have recent scholarship offers from Virginia and Pittsburgh, as well as interest from some other top programs.

Lecque

Five-star combo guard Jalen Lecque is still on UK’s recruiting radar.

The New York native — now playing for Christ School in North Carolina — had an in-home visit with the Wildcats over the weekend, according to national recruiting analyst Andrew Slater.

Duke assistant coach Nate James is expected to visit Lecque on Tuesday.

The 6-foot-4 prospect has been on Kentucky’s radar for months, and the Herald-Leader has been told in the past that Lecque could reclassify to 2018 if he were to land a scholarship offer from a blueblood program like UK or Duke.

Keldon Johnson

Keldon Johnson remained a top-10 national prospect in ESPN’s new rankings for the class of 2018, but he was one of three future Kentucky Wildcats that dropped in the website’s final update for this recruiting cycle.

Johnson fell one spot to No. 7 overall in the final rankings released Tuesday. Also dropping in the ESPN rankings were UK signees Immanuel Quickley (from No. 17 to No. 23 overall) and Tyler Herro (from No. 25 to No. 28 overall).

Before the final update, ESPN was the only major recruiting service that pegged Herro as a five-star recruit. He is now a four-star player on ESPN’s list.

New UK commitment EJ Montgomery jumped two spots to No. 14 overall.

Duke’s trio of R.J. Barrett, Zion Williamson and Cameron Reddish finished 1-2-3, respectively, in the final ESPN rankings.

Montgomery

Rivals.com finalized its basketball recruiting rankings for players in the class of 2018 on Monday, and Duke signee R.J. Barrett remains the No. 1 prospect for next season’s freshman class.

The Blue Devils no longer have a sweep of the top three players in 2018, however.

North Carolina signee Nassir Little jumped from No. 5 to No. 2 in the final rankings, leapfrogging Duke commitments Cameron Reddish, who fell one spot to No. 3, and Zion Williamson, who dropped two spots to No. 5. Oregon signee Bol Bol is No. 4 overall in the final rankings.
