Maxey

Tyrese Maxey scored 14 points to go along with five rebounds, three assists and three steals in the USA Basketball U18 team’s 105-73 victory over the Dominican Republic in Sunday night’s opener at the FIBA Americas tournament in Canada.

Maxey, a UK commitment for the 2019 class, was 5-for-8 from the field and 2-for-5 from three-point range. The USA team will play Panama on Monday night, and UK assistant coach Tony Barbee was there to see Maxey and a few UK targets play Sunday.

Starting alongside Maxey on Sunday were fellow UK targets Matthew Hurt (12 points and a team-high nine rebounds) and Cole Anthony (a team-high 18 points and three assists).

Matthew Hurt

National recruiting analyst Andrew Slater has logged a new Crystal Ball prediction in favor of Kansas for five-star power forward Matthew Hurt, one of UK’s top targets in the class of 2019.

Hurt — a 6-foot-9 prospect from Rochester, Minn. — was recently announced as part of the 12-player USA Basketball U18 team after taking part in that squad’s training camp in Colorado over the past week. Kansas Coach Bill Self is coaching the U18 team — meaning he’ll get plenty of time with Hurt — and the Jayhawks were seen by many as the favorites in his recruitment even before the U18 tryouts.

Maxey

UK commitment Tyrese Maxey has made it past the final round of cuts and will be part of the USA Basketball U18 team that travels to Canada later this week to play for a FIBA gold medal.

Maxey — a 6-foot-3 point guard — was one of 12 players selected for the squad, which is being coached by Kansas’ Bill Self and will start international play Sunday night. The future Kentucky Wildcat — a member of the class of 2019 — has been in Colorado Springs since last week as part of the U18 training camp.

Other UK targets joining Maxey on the U18 team are Cole Anthony and Matthew Hurt. Both of those uncommitted 2019 prospects are also being recruited by Self.

Allen — a 6-foot-7 wing in the class of 2019 — announced a new offer from Dayton on Tuesday and an offer from West Virginia on Wednesday. He’s also expected to visit Purdue on Wednesday, and the Boilermakers could come though with an offer on that trip. Kira Lewis will take an unofficial visit to Kentucky next month.

Lewis — a 6-foot-3 guard from Alabama — is scheduled to visit UK on June 10, according to recruiting analyst Jake Weingarten.

One of the top scorers on the Nike circuit this spring, Lewis told the Herald-Leader a few weeks ago that Alabama, Auburn, Baylor, Iowa State and Tennessee were among the schools recruiting him the hardest. Since then, he’s picked up new scholarship offers from Kansas, Indiana and several other top programs.

Hagans

Top UK basketball target James Wiseman remains the No. 1 overall prospect in the class of 2019, according to the newly released player rankings from 247Sports.

The recruiting website posted its updated rankings Thursday, keeping Wiseman — a 6-foot-11 power forward from Memphis — in the top spot. Wiseman is expected to choose either Kentucky or Memphis.

Point guard Cole Anthony moved from No. 7 to No. 2 in the new rankings. Anthony — a 6-2 prospect from New York and the son of former NBA player Greg Anthony — has been quiet about his recruitment, though UK has been monitoring him for months.

Carey

Vernon Carey — the No. 1 overall basketball prospect in the class of 2019, according to Rivals.com — has narrowed his recruitment to five schools.

Carey — a 6-foot-10 power forward from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. — is now considering Kentucky, Duke, Miami, Michigan State and North Carolina. He cut Kansas, UCLA and Florida from his previous list.

There were no surprises in Carey’s final five. Michigan State is the only school he’s been to for an official visit. Kentucky hosted him for an unofficial visit more than a year ago, and he told the Herald-Leader last month that he’s been in contact with Bam Adebayo about possibly playing for the Cats. Duke and UNC have been recruiting him hard for more than a year, and his father is a former football standout at Miami.
