Shittu

The emergence of power forward Jaxson Hayes as a serious UK recruiting target Tuesday night might also mean the Cats’ pursuit of top-10 prospect Simi Shittu is nearing an end.

A few minutes after Hayes — an under-the-radar player in the class of 2018 — received a scholarship offer from Kentucky, the Herald-Leader was told by Shittu’s high school coach, Alex Popp, that Shittu had not yet scheduled a visit to Lexington. The Herald-Leader had reached out to Popp several days earlier to check on Shittu’s status with the Wildcats following John Calipari’s trip to Vermont Academy last week to see him in an open gym.

Wiseman

James Wiseman — the first basketball recruit in the class of 2019 to earn a scholarship offer from Kentucky — is now the No. 1 junior in the country, according to the new Scout.com rankings.

Wiseman — a 6-foot-11 power forward who recently moved from Nashville to Memphis — landed an offer from Coach John Calipari last week, and he was UK assistant coach Joel Justus’ first visit at the start of the fall recruiting period earlier this month.

Kentucky is viewed as the possible early favorite in Wiseman’s recruitment. ESPN also recently moved Wiseman to the No. 1 spot in the 2019 rankings.

Zion Williamson

Zion Williamson — the No. 1 overall recruit in the 247Sports rankings for the class of 2018 — has scheduled two official visits.

Williamson wrote in his USA Today blog Monday that he will visit Duke on the weekend of Oct. 20 and UCLA the weekend of Oct. 27. The 6-foot-6 small forward from Spartanburg, S.C. is expected to use one of his other three official visits on a trip to UK, and the date of Big Blue Madness (Oct. 13) remains open on his calendar.

Bol Bol

John Calipari is expected to be in California next weekend for a meeting with five-star recruit Bol Bol, his mother told the Herald-Leader on Sunday.

Bol — a 7-foot-3 power forward at Mater Dei (Calif.) — is ranked by Scout.com as the No. 2 overall recruit in the class of 2018. Five-star wing R.J. Barrett is the only player ranked ahead of Bol on that list, and Barrett was in Lexington earlier this month for his official visit to Kentucky.

Calipari coached Bol at the Team USA training camp in Colorado Springs in June, but Bol did not make the final USA Basketball squad that traveled with UK’s coach to play in the FIBA World Cup in Egypt, an omission that some analysts predicted might hurt UK’s recruitment of Bol, who had previously expressed considerable interest in the Wildcats’ program.

Johnson

Five-star basketball recruit Keldon Johnson took an unofficial visit to Kentucky on Tuesday, and the Herald-Leader has been told that he picked up a scholarship offer from the Wildcats during the trip.

Johnson — a 6-foot-6 wing from South Hill, Va. — spent last season at nearby Huntington (W.Va.) Prep and took a couple of unofficial visits to UK during his time with that school. He transferred to Oak Hill for his final year of high school and is scheduled to be back in the state for the Marshall County Hoop Fest in early December.

247Sports ranks Johnson as the No. 11 overall recruit and No. 2 shooting guard in the 2018 class. Texas, Maryland and Kansas are among the schools that have extended scholarship offers and are thought to be at the top of Johnson’s list.

King

247Sports national recruiting insider Andrew Slater made a Crystal Ball change Tuesday, switching a prediction for five-star forward Louis King from Kentucky to Oregon.

King — a 6-foot-7 prospect from New Jersey — played on John Calipari’s USA Basketball U19 team last month in Egypt and has played several games in front of the UK coach on the Nike circuit this summer. Still, he does not have a scholarship offer from the Wildcats.

Oregon has been prioritizing King for months, and he’s expected to announce a shortened list sometime soon. He is the No. 14 overall prospect in the 2018 class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.
