The fall recruiting period begins Sunday, when college coaches will start traveling around the country to meet with their top targets in the 2019 class and beyond.

Heading into that fall recruiting period, there have been a few interesting Crystal Ball predictions related to some of the top prospects in the nation.

Perhaps the most intriguing development regards former UK commitment DJ Jeffries, who was viewed as a near-lock to Memphis in the immediate aftermath of his decommitment from the Wildcats earlier this summer.

When highly touted forward DJ Jeffries backed off of his commitment to Kentucky late last month, it was immediately assumed that he would ultimately end up at Memphis, where his former Nike league coach, Penny Hardaway, is now the head coach.

In the days after that decommitment, however, some national analysts raised the possibility that Memphis might not be the clear favorite in Jeffries’ new recruitment. On Thursday morning, national recruiting expert Andrew Slater logged a Crystal Ball pick in favor of Mississippi State, which has repeatedly been mentioned as a possible darkhorse candidate to land Jeffries’ commitment.

According to Dan Wolken of USA Today, one of the candidates to join Penny Hardaway’s coaching staff at Memphis is UK assistant Tony Barbee.

Barbee was an assistant at Memphis under John Calipari before embarking on his own head coaching career, then returning to Calipari’s staff at Kentucky. Barbee is also the lead recruiter on D.J. Jeffries, who committed to UK for the class of 2019 last week and played for Hardaway’s Team Penny squad on the Nike circuit last summer. Barbee is not recruiting any of UK’s 2018 signees or any of the Cats’ remaining targets from that class.

Memphis fired Tubby Smith last week and is expected to name Hardaway its next head coach.

There’s a new prediction on the day of highly touted basketball recruit D.J. Jeffries’ college announcement, and it’s good news for Kentucky.

247Sports director of recruiting Evan Daniels logged a pick in favor of the Wildcats on Jeffries’ Crystal Ball page Monday morning. The timing of Jeffries’ announcement — Monday at 8 p.m. — caught many in recruiting circles off guard when he revealed the decision date Sunday night in the aftermath of the NCAA Tournament bracket reveal.

Jeffries — the No. 26 overall prospect in the 2019 class, according to the 247Sports composite rankings — wrapped up his junior season with a Mississippi state title Saturday night, and now he’s ready to reveal his college choice. The three finalists are UK, Alabama and Mississippi State, and Wildcats Coach John Calipari has seen him three times over the past three months.

UK Coach John Calipari was in Mississippi on Tuesday night to see class of 2019 star D.J. Jeffries, according to recruiting analyst Garrett Tucker.

Jeffries — a 6-foot-7 small forward from the Memphis area — was one of the first basketball prospects in the 2019 class to earn a scholarship offer from Kentucky, and Calipari has now seen him three times over the past three months, including once at the Marshall County Hoop Fest in December.

UK is the early favorite on Jeffries’ 247Sports Crystal Ball page. Jeffries is the No. 26 overall prospect in the 2019 class, according to the 247 composite rankings.

John Calipari was in the Memphis area on Wednesday to see highly touted forward D.J. Jeffries, one of the top prospects in the class of 2019 and one of the earliest recipients of a UK scholarship offer in that group.

Jeffries, who visited Lexington for Big Blue Madness in October, received an offer from the Cats earlier that month. He was the second player in the 2019 class to get a UK offer after James Wiseman, one of his teammates with Team Penny on the Nike circuit.
