Holmgren

For more than a year, Jonathan Kuminga has been the undisputed No. 1 player in the basketball recruiting class of 2021, holding the top spots in the Rivals.com, 247Sports and ESPN rankings.

The bigger rankings debate for that group has been centered on who should come next in the class, with the top candidates being smooth-shooting 6-foot-9 forward Patrick Baldwin Jr., versatile 6-10 power forward Paolo Banchero, and unique 7-foot prospect Chet Holmgren.

Though Kuminga has not yet officially announced a move to the 2020 class, he did graduate from his New Jersey high school over the weekend, and it’s become even more clear that reclassification is a foregone conclusion. So, who will be the new No. 1 in 2021?

ESPN posted its final basketball recruiting rankings for the class of 2020 on Wednesday morning, and all six of Kentucky’s incoming players are well within the Top 100.

Boston

Two future Kentucky basketball players are projected as lottery picks in the latest 2021 NBA mock draft from ESPN, which features a list filled with familiar names.

Shooting guards Brandon Boston and Terrence Clarke are placed at No. 8 and No. 10, respectively, in the mock draft posted by ESPN on Monday morning. They are the two highest-rated prospects in UK’s No. 1-ranked recruiting class for next season.

Former UK point guard target Cade Cunningham is No. 1 on ESPN’s list. He’ll play his freshman season for Oklahoma State. Jalen Green, another former Kentucky target, is No. 2, and he’ll spend next season in the G League’s new professional development program.

Tyrese Maxey

ESPN released its latest NBA mock draft this week, and four Kentucky players were listed among the 60 picks for 2020.

Freshman guard Tyrese Maxey leads the Cats as the only projected first-round pick, going at No. 12 overall to the San Antonio Spurs (a move that would put him back in his home state of Texas).

The other three UK players listed are all among the final 10 picks of the second round, with Ashton Hagans going at No. 53 overall to the Charlotte Hornets, Nick Richards going at No. 57 to the Los Angeles Clippers, and Immanuel Quickley going at No. 58 to the Toronto Raptors.

Hardy

Five-star shooting guard Jaden Hardy — a major Kentucky recruiting target for the 2021 class — will lead Coronado (Nev.) against Bishop Gorman (Nev.) in a made-for-TV matchup Friday night.

Hardy — a 6-foot-4 prospect from Detroit, now living in the Las Vegas area — earned a UK scholarship offer last year and is clearly one of John Calipari’s top priorities in the 2021 class. His game will be televised live Friday at 11 p.m. ET on ESPNU.

Rivals.com national analyst Corey Evans recently told the Herald-Leader that he thinks Kentucky is the early leader for Hardy, one of the premier scorers in the country. Hardy had 62 points in a game earlier this week and has routinely scored more than 40 points in games this season.

Brandon Boston

ESPN updated its basketball recruiting rankings for all classes Wednesday morning, and a future Kentucky Wildcat made a major move at the top of the 2020 list.

UK signee Brandon Boston — a 6-foot-6 shooting guard — jumped from No. 12 to No. 6 overall in the 2020 class with his stellar season so far for star-studded Sierra Canyon, the California super-team that features several other Division I prospects, including the sons of NBA legends LeBron James and Dwyane Wade.

Boston is now Kentucky’s highest-ranked signee, according to ESPN, which placed fellow shooting guard Terrence Clarke two spots lower at No. 8 overall. Point guard Devin Askew dropped one spot to No. 25 overall, power forward Isaiah Jackson dropped three spots to No. 30, power forward Lance Ware moved up five spots to No. 40, and four-star wing Cam’Ron Fletcher dropped 11 spots to No. 58 in the 2020 rankings.

Clarke

The ESPN 100 basketball recruiting rankings for the class of 2020 were updated Thursday, and all six of Kentucky’s early signees were listed in the top 50.

Terrence Clarke, who was first inserted into the ESPN rankings at No. 13 overall after he reclassified from 2021 to 2010, is now rated as the No. 7 player in the class. That ranking is still curiously low compared to the other national recruiting services: Rivals.com and 247Sports both have Clarke at No. 4 overall, and Rivals national analyst Eric Bossi implied this week that it would be difficult for anyone to knock the future Wildcat out of the top five.

Jalen Green

ESPN updated its basketball recruiting rankings for the classes of 2020, 2021 and 2022 on Monday, and likely Southern Cal commitment Evan Mobley is the top prospect in the next senior class.

Mobley — a post player from California — has not committed to the Trojans yet, but his father is an assistant coach at USC and his older brother, five-star recruit Isaiah Mobley, will be a freshman there this season.

Rivals.com and 247Sports also rank Evan Mobley as the top player in 2020.

PJ Washington is staying in the NBA Draft, and he could be a lottery pick, according to the newest mock draft released by ESPN on Thursday morning.

Washington is listed as tied for 12th with two other players in the new mock draft, which notes that ties in the draft order will be settled by the NBA on Friday. The first 14 picks in the draft are considered lottery selections. Washington announced earlier this week that he would enter the draft and hire an agent, and he and UK both implied that he would keep his name in the draft and not return to school for a third season.

UK basketball commitment Keion Brooks will be back on national TV on Friday, when his undefeated La Lumiere (Ind.) squad plays against national powerhouse Oak Hill (Va.) in the Geico national tournament semifinals at 5 p.m.

The game will be televised live on ESPN2, and the Oak Hill roster features five-star guard Cole Anthony, one of the top five prospects in the 2019 class. Anthony is widely expected to commit to North Carolina for next season.
