Class of 2019 basketball star and major UK recruiting target Vernon Carey was one of 12 players named to the USA Basketball U17 squad Thursday morning.

Carey will be joined on the team by fellow UK targets Scottie Barnes, R.J. Hampton, Jeremy Roach, Jalen Green and Jalen Suggs — all recruits in the 2020 class.

James Wiseman — the Cats’ top remaining target for the class of 2019 — was invited to U17 training camp but was unable to participate in the tryouts due to an injury. Marshall County guard Zion Harmon — a possible UK target currently in the 2021 class — did not make the final cut Thursday.

Wiseman

There’s not much question who UK’s top recruiting target is in the basketball class of 2019.

John Calipari and all three of his assistant coaches — Kenny Payne, Tony Barbee and Joel Justus — started the first evaluation period on the spring recruiting circuit by watching No. 1 junior James Wiseman at the Nike league stop in Texas on Friday.

Wiseman — a 6-foot-11 power forward from Memphis East High School — was the first player from the 2019 class to earn a UK scholarship offer, and his recruitment is expected to come down to UK and Memphis, where his former Nike league and high school coach, Penny Hardaway, is now the head coach.
