Quickley

UK has one of the best basketball recruiting classes in the country for the class of 2018, but none of the Cats’ three early signees were included in the top 10 nationally in the new 247Sports player rankings released Thursday.

Immanuel Quickley (No. 14 overall) and Keldon Johnson (No. 15) are both considered five-star recruits by 247Sports, and Tyler Herro (No. 35) is a four-star prospect in those rankings. All three signed with UK last month.

Kentucky has finished with at least one top-10 recruit in the 247Sports rankings in every class under Coach John Calipari.

John Calipari

BENTON — UK Coach John Calipari arrived at the Marshall County Hoop Fest during the third quarter of the Lexington Catholic-Marshall County matchup Saturday night.

That game featured Lexington Catholic senior Zan Payne — the son of UK assistant coach Kenny Payne — who has been mentioned as a possible walk-on for the Wildcats next season. Kenny Payne was also at the Hoop Fest on Saturday night.

The two later games on Saturday’s schedule feature UK signee Keldon Johnson, five-star 2019 target D.J. Jeffries, and Adair County freshman Zion Harmon, who has visited Lexington a couple of times in recent weeks.

Calipari coached UK to a victory over Harvard earlier in the day Saturday.

Johnson

Kentucky missed out on No. 1 recruit R.J. Barrett on Friday, but the Wildcats look to be in a good spot to land five-star prospect Keldon Johnson on Saturday night.

Johnson — a 6-foot-6 shooting guard from Oak Hill Academy (Va.) — is set to announce his college decision at 6 p.m. Saturday, and the finalists are Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina State and Texas. He’ll reveal his college choice a day after Barrett — a 6-7 shooting guard from Canada — committed to Duke over UK.

High school basketball players are allowed to take five official visits — where the host college pays for most of the expenses — during the course of their recruitment, and many of UK’s top targets for the class of 2018 have already scheduled the bulk of their trips.

Five-star players R.J. Barrett, Keldon Johnson and Immanuel Quickley have been on UK’s campus for official visits in recent weeks, and another mega 2018 recruit — Zion Williamson — is expected to be in Lexington this weekend.

Johnson

Two weeks ago, after receiving a scholarship offer from the University of Kentucky, it seemed like five-star shooting guard Keldon Johnson would ultimately be part of the Wildcats’ recruiting class of 2018.

Coming out of this past weekend’s official visit to Texas, that recruitment might be looking a little different.

247Sports national analysts Jerry Meyer and Andrew Slater both switched their Crystal Ball picks for Johnson from Kentucky to Texas on Monday, shortly after the Oak Hill Academy star wrapped up his official visit to Austin.

Johnson

Five-star basketball recruit Keldon Johnson — the newest recipient of a UK scholarship offer — took an unofficial visit to North Carolina State over the weekend.

Johnson — a 6-foot-6 wing from South Hill, Va. — will be a senior at Oak Hill Academy this season and is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 11 overall recruit in the 2018 class. He is scheduled to take official visits to Texas, Florida State and Maryland next month.

UK hosted Johnson for an unofficial visit last week and extended a scholarship offer during that trip. Kentucky has since emerged as the favorite in Johnson’s recruitment.

Shittu

The new ESPN 100 basketball rankings for the class of 2018 were released Wednesday morning, and R.J. Barrett has moved past Zion Williamson and into the No. 1 spot.

A couple of players who have moved up on UK’s recruiting radar in recent weeks also received rankings bumps.

Simi Shittu — a 6-9 forward from Canada — is now the No. 6 overall prospect in the 2018 class. Shittu does not yet have an “official” scholarship offer from Kentucky, but John Calipari flew to Canada to watch him play recently and the versatile prospect is expected to land that offer as soon as he visits Lexington, a trip that could happen very soon.

Johnson

Five-star basketball recruit Keldon Johnson took an unofficial visit to Kentucky on Tuesday, and the Herald-Leader has been told that he picked up a scholarship offer from the Wildcats during the trip.

Johnson — a 6-foot-6 wing from South Hill, Va. — spent last season at nearby Huntington (W.Va.) Prep and took a couple of unofficial visits to UK during his time with that school. He transferred to Oak Hill for his final year of high school and is scheduled to be back in the state for the Marshall County Hoop Fest in early December.

247Sports ranks Johnson as the No. 11 overall recruit and No. 2 shooting guard in the 2018 class. Texas, Maryland and Kansas are among the schools that have extended scholarship offers and are thought to be at the top of Johnson’s list.
