Carey

Vernon Carey — the No. 1 overall basketball prospect in the class of 2019, according to Rivals.com — has narrowed his recruitment to five schools.

Carey — a 6-foot-10 power forward from Fort Lauderdale, Fla. — is now considering Kentucky, Duke, Miami, Michigan State and North Carolina. He cut Kansas, UCLA and Florida from his previous list.

There were no surprises in Carey’s final five. Michigan State is the only school he’s been to for an official visit. Kentucky hosted him for an unofficial visit more than a year ago, and he told the Herald-Leader last month that he’s been in contact with Bam Adebayo about possibly playing for the Cats. Duke and UNC have been recruiting him hard for more than a year, and his father is a former football standout at Miami.

247Sports director of recruiting Steve Wiltfong logged a Crystal Ball prediction Friday in favor of Miami for four-star defensive back Keontra Smith, who was Kentucky’s first commitment for the class of 2019.

Smith — a Hollywood, Fla., native who committed to UK last June — received a scholarship offer from Miami last month and was on the Hurricanes’ campus Saturday for the program’s junior day event.

247Sports ranks him as the No. 12 safety in the 2019 class and the No. 198 overall prospect nationally in that group.

Quickley

As expected, five-star point guard Immanuel Quickley will not take his official visit to Miami this weekend due to the growing threat of Hurricane Irma.

Quickley — a 6-foot-3 prospect from Maryland — visited Kansas last week and is expected to visit UK next week. Miami is the only other school under consideration, and it’s unclear whether he will reschedule that trip.

UK remains the heavy favorite to land Quickley, who is ranked by Scout.com as the No. 8 overall prospect in the class of 2018.
