There’s not much question who UK’s top recruiting target is in the basketball class of 2019.

John Calipari and all three of his assistant coaches — Kenny Payne, Tony Barbee and Joel Justus — started the first evaluation period on the spring recruiting circuit by watching No. 1 junior James Wiseman at the Nike league stop in Texas on Friday.

Wiseman — a 6-foot-11 power forward from Memphis East High School — was the first player from the 2019 class to earn a UK scholarship offer, and his recruitment is expected to come down to UK and Memphis, where his former Nike league and high school coach, Penny Hardaway, is now the head coach.

Top UK basketball recruiting target James Wiseman had an in-home visit with Memphis Coach Penny Hardaway and new Tigers assistant coach Mike Miller on Wednesday.

Hardaway was Wiseman’s coach with Team Penny on the Nike circuit last summer, and the 6-foot-11 power forward from Nashville then transferred to Memphis East High School to play for Hardaway this past season.

Wiseman hosted UK Coach John Calipari and assistant coach Joel Justus for an in-home recruiting visit Monday, and he was the first player from the class of 2019 to earn a scholarship offer from the Wildcats.

John Calipari will have an in-home visit with top basketball prospect James Wiseman on Monday, the latest in a string of recruiting visits for the UK head coach over the past few days.

Wiseman — a 6-foot-11 power forward from Memphis, Tenn. — is the No. 1 overall player in the class of 2019, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. He was the first prospect in the 2019 class to earn a scholarship offer from UK, and he visited Lexington for Big Blue Madness last fall.

USA Today: Barbee a candidate for Memphis job

According to Dan Wolken of USA Today, one of the candidates to join Penny Hardaway’s coaching staff at Memphis is UK assistant Tony Barbee.

Barbee was an assistant at Memphis under John Calipari before embarking on his own head coaching career, then returning to Calipari’s staff at Kentucky. Barbee is also the lead recruiter on D.J. Jeffries, who committed to UK for the class of 2019 last week and played for Hardaway’s Team Penny squad on the Nike circuit last summer. Barbee is not recruiting any of UK’s 2018 signees or any of the Cats’ remaining targets from that class.

Memphis fired Tubby Smith last week and is expected to name Hardaway its next head coach.

Wiseman

The news Wednesday that Tubby Smith would not be the head coach at Memphis next season led to a few more predictions in favor of the Tigers on the 247Sports Crystal Ball page of James Wiseman, the No. 1 recruit in the 2019 class.

The assumption is that former Memphis star Penny Hardaway, the head coach of Memphis East High School and leader of Team Penny on the Nike circuit, will be the next coach of the Memphis Tigers.

Wiseman — a 6-foot-11 power forward, originally from Nashville — plays for both of the teams that Hardaway coaches. Until the Hardaway-to-Memphis rumors started heating up recently, Kentucky was the unanimous choice on Wiseman’s 247Sports Crystal Ball page. He was the first player from the 2019 class to earn a scholarship offer from John Calipari and has clearly emerged as UK’s No. 1 target in the class.

Wiseman

As the Penny Hardaway-to-Memphis talk continues to heat up, expect similar talk around No. 1 recruit James Wiseman and the Tigers.

247Sports recruiting reporter Adam Rowe — a Duke insider — is the latest to log a pro-Memphis prediction on Wiseman’s 247Sports Crystal Ball page. National recruiting analyst Andrew Slater was the first to make such a pick last month, when rumors that Hardaway might replace Tubby Smith at his alma mater began heating up.
