Tyler Ulis doesn’t have the usual size of a John Calipari point guard, but he does have the toughness that UK’s coach likes in his floor leader.
Ulis is a shifty ball handler who excels at getting into the lane and making creative passes — or taking it straight to the basket himself. On defense, he employs his quickness to pester opponents.
“You look at him and you think, ‘Man, he’s a small guard,'” Scout.com analyst Evan Daniels told the Herald-Leader. “But what he does and brings to the table, I think, is going to translate to the next level. He’s a guy that you can trust running your basketball team.”
The Chicago-area prospect will likely take over the starting point guard position in 2014 if current freshman Andrew Harrison heads to the NBA, as is expected. Ulis’ father said that Calipari has talked to the family multiple times about the expectations of UK fans.
It’s a challenge that Ulis is eager to accept.
“Kentucky fans want to win and they want to win now. There’s not much room for error,” James Ulis told the Herald-Leader. “And I enjoyed that (Calipari) said that. … That’s great to hear. If you want to play at this level, there’s going to be high expectations. And I think Tyler welcomes that.”

“I have no doubt that he can play for any program in the country. I have that much confidence in him. For those who haven’t seen him, they’re going to be in for a very pleasant surprise.”
