Vernon Carey has long been locked in battle with James Wiseman for the No. 1 spot in the national rankings, and he was also among Kentucky’s earliest recruiting priorities in the class of 2019.
The son of a former Miami Hurricanes and Miami Dolphins offensive lineman, Carey brings a big body to the basketball court, where he has coupled a nimble, versatile offensive game with a great ability to rebound his position. Add it up and Carey is clearly one of the most college-ready basketball prospects in the country.
A point in Kentucky’s favor: Carey met Bam Adebayo, the former Wildcats star, during a visit to Lexington a couple years back and has remained in touch with him. Adebayo has put in a good word on UK’s behalf.
Carey has cut his list of schools to Kentucky, Duke, Miami, Michigan State and North Carolina, and he’ll be finished with his official visits in time for the early signing period in November. He has said he’d like to make a college decision before the end of the year.

Carey averaged 26.0 points and 10.4 rebounds per game as a high school junior and was one of the top post players on the Nike circuit this past spring and summer.
“He’s a smart kid — on and off the court — with a high basketball IQ. … He shoots the ball at a high clip. And he just moves so well. He really is a mismatch nightmare. And he’s so unselfish. That’s the best part about him.”
