Payne — the son of UK assistant coach Kenny Payne — was enjoying a stellar senior season at Lexington Catholic before suffering a devastating knee injury 25 games in, putting an end to his high school career.
The hardworking but undersized forward was on the radar for some mid-major scholarship offers before the injury, which cost him a chance to impress the college coaches who often show up for postseason high school basketball.
Instead, he’ll walk on at UK, a program he’s well familiar with. “It’s a great opportunity, for real,” Payne told the Herald-Leader after committing in early May. “I really like it here (in Lexington). The next level’s gonna be a big stage.”
He will continue to rehab his knee over the next few months and then be ready to practice with the Cats as soon as he’s cleared to compete.

High school stats

Payne averaged 19.3 points and 8.7 rebounds per game at Lexington Catholic last season, playing in 25 games before suffering a season-ending knee injury and missing the postseason.

“I’m tickled to death as a Kentucky fan that he’s there next year, that they’re gonna have a great team and that Zan’s gonna be a part of that.”
